052847 - MATERIAL AND MANUFACTURING FOR DESIGN
The course aims to provide the student with an in-depth study of the concepts learned during the laurea triennale (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) on materials and technologies, with the main purpose of providing selection criteria to identify materials and the most appropriate technologies for the realization of an industrial product. The two course modules develop, on the one hand, material selection methods for industrial product innovation, and on the other introduce the main manufacturing and assembly processes which, together with the choice of material, affect and influence the design and realization of industrial products.

Students: - know the criteria of the choice of materials and technologies that are most indicated for the realisation of an industrial product; - can apply the skills acquired to project elaboration; - can identify criticalities and find solutions.
The teaching aims at presenting the student with an in-depth study of the main concepts acquired during the bachelor program regarding materials and manufacturing technologies, with the goal of providing selection criteria for the most suitable materials and technologies to make an industrial product.
The teaching is composed of two parallel modules:
Material selection criteria and methods
Design for manufacturing
The module “Material selection criteria and methods”, presenting general topics but with a specific focus on polymeric materials, deals with:
the roles taken by material and technology to satisfy both technical and aesthetical requirements
the main materials selection methods with a strong emphasis on the analysis selection method
application of the analysis selection method to a case study, while recalling the main categories of material properties and their relationship with product requirements
the main criteria for the selection of a shaping technology
a description of the main shaping technologies available for polymeric materials, together with their characteristics and limitations
The module also gives a short introduction on polymeric matrix composites, presenting their characteristics in comparison with traditional materials, and the associated production technologies.
The "Design for manufacturing" module deals with two main classes of manufacturing techniques: the processes for the manufacture of metal components (casting, forming, machining), and the assembly processes (welding and mechanical joining).
For each process, general aspects treated in previous courses will be recalled, including: working principles, resources, and application criteria. More detailed topics will then be examined, such as tooling, process defects, production plans, and cost estimation. Finally, the main rules for designing the product according to the need of manufacturing (design for manufacture, design for assembly) will be introduced and discussed.
The subject will be covered with extensive use of examples and industrial cases. In relation to the projects assigned in the product design studio that the students will attend in the same semester, specific processes or engineering choices will possibly be treated as additional topics.
There are no pre-requisites for attendance.
Modalità di valutazione
The exam consists in separate tests for the two modules, which must both be passed with a sufficient mark. The tests will be evaluated according to the student’s ability to demonstrate her/his knowledge of the course topics and to apply it to product design. Case studies will in fact present correct selection of materials and technologies for example of real products.
As for the material module, students shall correctly identify a suitable set of requirements for a given product, relating each of them to a specific material property, comparing the ranking of different materials using the analysis selection method. They shall also be able to describe and compare different production technologies.
For the manufacturing module, students will be able to discuss the choice and the comparison of manufacturing alternatives on the basis of design specifications, describe and apply the rules of design for manufacture/assembly, and provide first-approximation estimates of manufacturing costs.
