Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The objective of the treatment is to supply students with the instruments needed to return and present the design project of a product-service system and the research at its basis. Visualization and Prototyping, through the analysis of practices and the critical presentation of different research and planning techniques, leads students to experiment innovative project representation instruments, visualising and prototyping projects, using different technologies, style models and narrative approaches.

Argomenti trattati

This course aims to provide tools for visualizing and prototyping a product service system and the complementary analysis and research activities. In particular, the course proposes storytelling techniques, the audiovisual language and genres as further tools for developing in-field activities and/or represent and simulate the experience proposed by the project developed.
Documentaries, video-interviews, video-scenarios will be the main representation genre that we will reflect upon and use for developing the projects. We will use multimedia and audiovisual communication techniques: storytelling, scriptwriting, storyboarding, animation, and representation tools, shooting and editing.
Design proposals and prototypes will be presented to a selected group of stakeholders collecting their feedbacks and declarations of interest. The experience will be a simulation of one of the following fruition contexts: a communication action for building the audience of reference; meetings/interviews/demos to cultural institutions and stakeholders.
The course is based both on lectures, exercises and seminars. The students will work in groups.
This course integrates contributions from different areas of design (Communication Design, Movie Design, Media Design), the arts and professional filmmaking in order to provide participants with a comprehensive experience of communicating a service.
The course is based on four main areas of competences:
◦the basics of audiovisual language;
◦perspectives and developments of the audiovisual – case studies and guests about cinema and broadcasting experiences;
◦focus on different genres and formats.
•Narratives (world building, narrative structures, degrees of narrativity).
•Digital media, transmedia and crossmedia.
◦basics on communication strategies;

◦the strategic use of digital media for engaging stakeholders and final users in participating to the narrative/performative process.


There are no pre-requisites for attendance.

Evaluation criteria and final exam

The course is organised around exercises and assignments that, together with the exam’s discussion, will bring to the final evaluation.

Students will work in teams, each one developing an original project: the final evaluation will be the average of the marks obtained in the assignments and the concluding presentation/performance (Final exam).

The evaluation criteria for this course will be based upon the student's capability to get into the topic, to generate, to develop and present innovative ideas, following and interpreting the process suggested by the instructors. A good capability of team working and a pro-active participation to the course will be also considered very positively.

Course’s rules 

Attendance is mandatory: only a maximum of 2 absences will be allowed. Participation to the collective presentations and the moments of delivery of the assignments are mandatory.

Assignments cannot be delivered or presented in dates different than those scheduled in the course’s calendar.

Sufficient marks are equal or major than 18/30.
