In this Studio advanced methodologies are applied for describing and interpreting physical and product contexts - practical and theoretical - of contemporary architectural culture, with the aim of experimenting with the transformation of the environment built through the design of architecture. The laboratories are based on the integration of specific architectural composition expertise with others from the urban studies sector. In this way, paradigms are set up to understand and understand, in historical perspective and in different scales, the space inhabited in its multiple configurations: morphological and typological, ecological and environmental, economic and social, anthropological and cultural. In the labs, integrated knowledge allows to modify the choices made by the architecture project in relation to the complexity of the urban and territorial contexts to which it is addressed. In this framework, the techniques, tools and methods acquired in the field of architectural and urban planning are used to investigate complex relationships such as those between open spaces, constructed and relationships, infrastructures and landscapes, cultural heritage and neglected or vulnerable areas, permanent and temporary structures, public uses and private destinations. The didactic goal is to prepare students for the task of improving the quality of human settlements, promoting the conscious use of resources and measuring the inherent fragility of the built environment
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
According to the Dublin Descriptors (DdD), passing the exam certifies the acquisition of the following results:
DdD 1 knowledge and understanding
- knowledge of the fundamental elements of the architectural and urban composition for their use in the design process for the transformation of places.
DdD 2 ability to apply knowledge and understanding
- ability to control the compositional aspects of the project, its typological and functional characteristics, which regulate the qualitative relationships of the architectural forms of the space.
DdD 3 (autonomy of judgment), 4 (communication skills) and 5 (learning ability)
- ability to operate and communicate independently the design choices made (DdD 3, 4 and 5).

Milan form is a unique and singular result of the encounter of several urban densities and forms.
Corners are the form where this encounters takes place.
Corners sublimate the essence of urban character because of their radical and complex relationship between void and architectural density.
The compacity and the porosity of the historical city and the modernist city face themselves in some special corners where open space takes shape in relationship with architectural forms.
Corners represent the edge of different urban fabric to be represented through their stability or their fragility.
Corners enhances Aldo Rossi’s definition of the “city of parts”; corners are the place where different parts of the city conceived and designed, and which succeed in connecting to form a unified whole.
Corners contains architectural accuracy.
Corner need coherence together with ambiguity.
Hermes in greek cosmogony protect any crossing of three or four roads together with thresholds, and is god of messages and logos, commerce and thieves asurban life syntesis.
The investigation is about “what is the form of density?” through the formal singularity of the project of urban corner or triangles in strategic places in the city of Milan.
Contemporarity is facing the completion or new foundation of great metropolitan complexes and their seek for form ask for experiments in defining the tools and the shape of the city through his density and the relationship between compact and porosity.
The goal is to establish a reciprocal link between the urban and architectural form and the metropolitan need for a mixed use complex.
Contemporary lack for a public expenditure in public functions is the result of a neo liberal welfare.
The investigation will quest the architectural form of the public city and the complexity (and hopefully contradiction) given by the creation of a metropolitan scale mix of public-private functions.
The project will be applied in Milan.
The studio will provide a series of special corners and a list of functions.
Students will investigate the architectural form of the corner buildings and the urban capability of an accurate set of functions to produce a metropolitan architecture.
Modalità di valutazione
Evaluation principles: 1knowledge and understanding 2 applying knowledge and understanding 3 making judgements 4 communication skills 5 learning skills
Assessment procedure Description
Final Oral presentation of the submitted work • theoretical questions on topics covered in the programme • questions intended to reveal the student's ability to connect the various topics covered in the programme with one another and with previous studies • questions intended to reveal the student's ability to explain design principles and theorethical issues
Studio work will be evaluated all along the semester through reviews of the student work. Each intermediate delivery will be evaluated separately. Final grade will consider the whole trayectory together with the final work.
