The workshop addresses the architecture project from the point of view of interior space.
As a fundamental phenomenon independent of the scale to which it applies, it is characterized by a peculiar attention to its users and their gestures of relationship and openness to others and to the world; is captured and determined as a concrete body constructed, in dynamics, verified to the scale of detail, between its edges, the light that animates it, the furnishings that equip it, the materials and decorative elements that qualify it; aims to define a precise identity of every place, in the dialectic between spacecraft, figuration, dimensioning, structural aspects, environmental control, and energy performance. The laboratory places particular emphasis on the recovery of existing and often fragile architectural and architectural heritage by interpreting the themes of contemporary living, from those of residence to those of complex and multifunctional organisms for culture, museum systems and social life up to to those of retraining and open space equipment. Integration with the disciplines of technical physics allows for the verification of microclimate comfort in residential new buildings and upgrading existing ones, lighting and acoustics for museum sites, exhibitions, culture and commerce in a 'efficiency of the product and energy saving.
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
According to the Dublin Descriptors (DdD), passing the exam certifies the acquisition of the following results:
DdD 2 ability to apply knowledge and understanding
- ability to develop the interior space project at the appropriate scale, in which the attention to the human dimension of architecture is expressed in the definition of the material and constructive aspects, of the furnishing equipment or of the exhibition systems;
DdD 3 (autonomy of judgment), 4 (communication skills) and 5 (learning ability)
- ability to operate and communicate independently the design choices made (DdD 3, 4 and 5).

Architecture of Interiors Design Studio will work on Dwelling, the possibility of establishing a meaningful relationship with the world, as Christian Norberg Schultz stated (in The concept of dwelling: on the way to figurative architecture, 1985). More in detail, we will inflect dwelling in its private meaning: the Studio will work on the topic of housing, and especially on public and social housing.
We will consider the house as the place of dwelling par excellence, in which women and men try for the first time to understand and know the world and its rules, and to perform their identity, identifying and representing themselves through things. As Martin Heidegger recognized, Thinging is the nearing of world. Nearing is the nature of nearness. As we preserve the thing qua thing we inhabit nearness. The nearing of nearness is the true and sole dimension of the mirror-play of the world (in The thing, in Poetry, language, thought, 1971).
The house, not only “the house of man” defined by Ernesto Nathan Rogers in 1946, but also “the house for the children, women, old men, the sleep, rest, dreams, leniency, abandonments, pain, laziness, idleness, the passions, love, birth and death” defined by Gio Ponti (in In praise of Architecture, 1957) will be the core of our project, as an object itself, and in the relationship with public spaces and services completing it.
We will work mainly on the widespread patrimony in Milano, a belt surrounding the city centre designed and built mainly in the first 60 years of past centuy.
Studio activities will be organized in two following steps:
01.
Interiors exercises - minimum dwelling spaces: a short term intensive exercise, to establish and share dimensions and properties of spaces and equipment of every day life spaces;
02.
Interiors design - envisioning: The project will deal with existing social housing estates in the city of Milano; it will pass through the following steps:
- direct knowledge of the neighborhoods, through the analysis and the knowledge of the existing documents on the original projects and through surveys and visits, and when possible the direct relationship with residents and associations;
- focalization of the topic, through the analysis of contemporary and historical case studies, and the understanding of specific needs of users and managers of public housing;
- design of the renewed use of existing patrimony, with a specific attention to the flexibility of spaces, to stick to temporariness of use and users, to the connections with the public spaces and the city, and to sustainability (also in terms of reduction of land consumption) and energy saving.
It will be specified in the detailed scale of the Architecture of Interiors, able to give form to human needs and to translate them in the material forms of its space, margins, and equipment.

Modalità di valutazione
Projects will be developed in small groups, experiencing different representation techniques, such as analytical schemes, sketches, technical drawings, models, technical reports, graphics, and other documents, in the idea of improving specific communication skills. In addition to weekly reviews, Studio's activities will be structured by collective check of the student’s works.
The exam will consist of a group assessment of the activities performed in the project workshop, supported by boards and models; it will verify student’s advancements and comprehension of the subjects of the Studio. Design skills, knowledge and understanding and their application, communication skills will be used as parameters.
