Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The Master Plan Studio (MPS) encompasses the subjects of Urban Design and Urban Design Process Management. Its aim is working on the different urban forms of the contemporary city which are interested by several opportunities of regeneration, related to a previous period of growth and urban development, the economic crisis of the last years, an arising awareness of the natural resources and networks. The master plan, which is today an important tool to guide the transformation, can assume different contents and dimensions to comply with these mixed conditions: how to design a master plan and what issues must be considered is therefore the specific problem to face with the course.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

The teaching and learning experience is multilevel, for this reason the course is articulated in three phases.

  • During the first phase students will be gain the capacity to make a meaningful description/interpretation of the selected area for the project;
  • During the second phase they will be able to define a spatial and temporal strategy to regenerate the selected area, considering both the territorial and urban levels (relationships, connections), and the local level (how to give form and organization to the specific built and open spaces). Through the choice and discussion of some case studies students will explore the complexity of transferring solutions from one situation to another;
  • During the third phase students will define the transformation actions to give form and organization to spaces in accordance with the strategy, and the specific issues and needs of regeneration emerged in the previous phases (also with the definition of abacus and guidelines for the project). Through a synthetic relation they must communicate the logic and the main concepts of their work.

At the end students will be able to use some relevant tools, but also to understand the typical contemporary regeneration problems: because areas are totally or partially abandoned, because their transformation has been interrupted, because need to be refurbished or redefined for a lack of safety or functions, to contain energy dispersions, to host various activities and populations, etc.

Argomenti trattati

The activity of the Master Plans Studio is carried out with the support of lectures, reviews and seminars according to the three phases. The main topics are:

  • features of the territories involved in the master plans and evolution during the time, their planning history, current projects and programs;
  • today planning and design issues: liveability and sustainability;
  • master planning process;
  • discussion of some good examples and practices as references.

The prerequisites are:

- Capacity to work in-group, managing different disciplinary contributions for the composition of a complex and trans-scalar project;

- Ability to collect and select information on the project areas and territorial fields, organizing data, maps, and information through many resources;

- Ability to draw with various techniques, focusing on a set of communication aims and scales;

- Previous design and planning experiences focusing on spatial configuration acquired through Studios and Workshops.

Modalità di valutazione

The final evaluation will assess all the presentations and works produced by each group of students during the course: first, intermediate and final deliveries.

* The evaluation will be completed by an oral individual discussion about the contents of the course, the produced materials, bibliographic references, and lectures.

* The elements for the evaluation of the individual performance are: attendance; active participation in the group work and reviews; knowledge of the group’s work; knowledge of the course’s topics (lectures and contents of bibliographic references).

* The presence during the course is mandatory: each student has to be present at least at 70% of the total amount of Course’s lectures and daily activity.
