BASIC MISSION AND TRAINING GOALS

The course is aimed at providing an updated overview of the recent developments in the design of structural glass elements. After a short introduction on the basic principles of structural glass design, emphasis is given to the open issues in the field presenting the most recent approaches. 

 

MAIN TOPICS TREATED AND PROGRAMME OF THE COURSE

The course is divided into three main parts.

The first one is devised to the introduction of the main characteristics of glass as a structural material, and to the evaluation of its strength. The second part presents the behaviour and the main challenges in the design of structural glass elements. Finally, some case studies and the experimental procedure to test structural glass elements will be presented. 

  1. Introduction. Course overview, exam modalities, brief history of glass.
  2. Material: production, type of glass, main characteristics of laminated glass.
  3. Strength of glass: theoretical basis and code provisions.
  4. Viscoelastic models for glass interlayers. Cold bending.
  5. Structural behaviour of laminated glass beams and plates.
  6. Thermal shock failure and maximum temperature gradients of glass panels.
  7. Optimal design of structural glass.
  8. Experimental issues and design by testing.

TEACHING ORGANIZATION

The course will be delivered in 12 lectures.
