Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

Contemporary cities are undergoing major changes that affect the socio-demographic, socio-economic and socio-institutional dimensions. Such changes have deep impacts on the contexts in which people live, on the resources they can get access to, as well as on their housing needs and practices and residential choices.

The aim of the course is to give the student some critical and practical instruments to consider the implications of the current changes in contemporary cities for architectural and planning work.

The course will first introduce the student to sociology, providing the basic elements of classic and contemporary theory and of methodology. Second, it will focused on the analysis of the main changes affecting contemporary cities in a comparative perspective, looking in depth to: 1) socio-demographic trends and changes in family structures; 2) socio-economic changes; 3) changes related to migration flows; 4) changes in local governance systems; 5) the impact of the current great economic recession.

Different materials will be proposed for discussion.

Active participation of attending students throughout the course will be encouraged and evaluated. Attending students will be required to carry out an exercise on one of the themes of the course, to be agreed upon with the professor, to develop it under the supervision of the professor and of the tutor, and to present it and discuss it in class.

At the beginning of the course a syllabus will be provided with a detailed lists of the readings for both attending and non attending students.
