DESIGN & MANUFACTURING

 

The course Design & Manufacturing provides the students with the fundamental of mechanical design and manufacturing of components and products. The course is composed by two modules, whose program and exam procedures are integrated and jointly carried out.

 

ENGINEERING 

This course, in close cooperation with the Manufacturing module, details with the basic methodologies aimed at assessing the functionality and the structural strength of industrial products. The basic concepts and issues for the evaluation of the feasibility, stiffness, mechanical resistance, stability and optimization of an industrial product with respect of the material and of the expected service conditions are introduced and applied to practical cases.

Starting from the concept and its development toward an industrial product, the course covers the choice and the analysis of the correct joint method, the definition of a model for the functional and structural assessment, the importance of the correct design of the details and the final set up of the procedure for a complete assessment of the project.

The problem of the project optimization is introduced.

Lab sessions will be provided through numerical and practical exercises as well as computer-based laboratory. Students are expected to work on a facultative team project developed along the course.

MANUFACTURING 

This module, in close cooperation with the Engineering module, presents a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of the most common manufacturing processes for metallic alloys, spanning from principles to applications and technology trends. Students will learn the key factors of manufacturing processes for different industrial products in metal and metallic alloys and will realize how process capabilities (rate, cost, quality) are determined by the material characteristics, process parameters, and machine designs.

Relevant manufacturing processes will include casting, bulk deformation and sheet metal working, non-conventional processes (laser, plasma, waterjet) and few notes of additive processes; with their own manufacturing best practices, design options, and product aesthetics.

The module will conclude with a perspective on needs for future advancement of manufacturing processes and major opportunities.

Lab sessions will be provided through numerical and practical exercises as well as computer-based laboratory for cost analysis. Students are expected to work on a facultative team project developed along the course.

 

 


Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

The exam, for both modules, ENGINEERING and MANUFACTURING, consists of three parts: the written exam (mandatory), the oral exam (facultative) and the evaluation of the team project (facultative). To obtain a positive final mark the student should pass the written exam with a grade greater than or equal to 18/30. Then the oral exam can be taken. The consequent mark is obtained as average of the two grades. The final mark is obtained adding the extra-mark of the team project, when carried out.

The final mark is obtained as  average between the two final marks of the two modules, ENGINEERING and MANUFACTURING, when both positively passed (>= 18/30 each one)
