The course provides a methodology to align IT design choices with business objectives. The course defines the concept of IT arhitecture, classifies the fundamental IT design choices and maps these choices onto the IT architecture from both a software and an infrastructural point of view. The IT architecture is then discussed for the manufacturing, utilities and financial services industries, by considering both intra- and inter-organizational processes along the industry value chain (e-business). On this basis, the course provides the methodological tools to support the analysis of organizational requirements. Particularly,  in the area of executive information systems , the KPI approach is discussed.

Based on the concept of IT architecture, the course provides a functional map of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, by distinguishing core and extended functionalities. The course explains how information systems have evolved over time and how ERPs represent the result of a continuous and still ongoing functional integration process. The course starts by reviewing the literature of the information perspective of organisational theory. This literature provides a framework to understand the organisational change caused by ERP projects. Then, the course discusses the core functional areas of ERP systems: accounting&finance, operations, and management&control.

The course also provides a methodology for the strategic and operating planning of information technologies (IT). The following issues are discussed: survey and audit of legacy systems and related constraints on IT projects, alignment between IT and process planning, IT costs, IT project planning and management, evolution of ITs and impact on strategic planning. The methodology is practiced by preparing the IT planning document or business plan for a case study.

Extended ERP functional areas are also explained, including customer relationship management (CRM), supply chain management (SCM), Web Information systems (WIS), work force management systems (WFM), business intelligence (BI), social media, and mobile ERP applications. Numerous case studies are discussed in class. The course will be based on lectures and case-study discussion sessions. The students will also be given assignments which will be presented and discussed in class.

Il corso si propone di fornire gli strumenti metodologici necessari per allineare le scelte progettuali informatiche con gli obiettivi delle imprese. A tal scopo, il corso si propone di classificare e organizzare le scelte progettuali fondamentali definendo l’architettura del sistema informativo di un’organizzazione, dal punto di vista hardware, software e infrastrutturale. Tale architettura viene poi approfondita per i fondamentali processi organizzativi di produzione, marketing e finanza e per i processi inter-organizzativi di gestione di clienti e fornitori (e-business). Su questa base, viene fornita una metodologia di analisi e specifica dei requisiti informativi di un’impresa.

Il corso fornisce poi una metodologia per la messa a punto del piano di sviluppo dell’informatica aziendale e gli strumenti metodologici per la sua gestione operativa. Sono in particolare affrontati i seguenti temi: la rilevazione e l'analisi dei sistemi esistenti e dei conseguenti vincoli sui progetti, l'allineamento tra pianificazione informatica e dei processi, i costi delle tecnologie informatiche, la pianificazione e la gestione dei progetti, le linee evolutive delle tecnologie e il loro impatto sugli obiettivi di pianificazione. Gli elementi metodologici sono applicati a un caso reale per il quale viene documentato il piano di sviluppo.
