Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is a key component to ensuring quality, safety, access and efficiency in healthcare. This course introduces current approaches and future directions in e-health and the use of ICT in healthcare in general, as well as key concepts and tools from the underlying discipline of health informatics.

Topics include: electronic health records (EHRs); hospital and primary care and public health information systems; supporting clinical decision-making for health professionals through ICT; e-health in the community for preventive healthcare and for patient and career support; regulatory influences on e-health including management and governance, privacy, security, and confidentiality; the role of data standards, vocabularies, and nomenclatures in e-health; research and development in e-health.

Introduction to e-health

  • What is e-health?
    • Concepts and definitions
    • Types of e-health applications
    • Overview, definitions and history of e-health and biomedical informatics
  • What renders e-health specific?
    • History of ICT in healthcare
    • Success factors and barriers to e-health implementation

E-health for patients

  • Who is the patient?
    • Differences in patient groups
    • E-patients and empowerment, activation, engagement, apomediation
    • health literacy and digital literacy
  • Patient data and ethics, e-health and ethics: appropriate use, quality standards, privacy, EU data protection
  • Data lifecycle, data security, identity theft, standard for health data, de-identification, pseudo-anonymization

 

  • E-health applications for patients:
    • Personal Health Records / Clinical data linkage tools and services, the Lombardy example (FSE, CUP)
    • Patient and family portal access to EMR systems - possibilities and challenges
    • Patient monitoring / E-health solutions for chronic disease manageme
  • Support groups and communities / Social media in health
  • Telehealth and telemedicine:remote monitoring, remote interpretation, video-based telehealth
  • Remote monitoring of implanted devices

 

E-health for lifestyle and prevention

  • Consumer health informatics, communication tools and barriers for social media
  • Body tracking and the Quantified Self
  • Mobile devices and healthcare apps, app regulation, app quality assessment, examples of cardiovascular mobile applications
