Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

Objectives and contents of the course

The course is dedicated to the environmental and engineering aspects involved in the energy exploitation of biomass and waste materials. The module on environmental aspects is focused on giving a perspective on the environmental impacts of biomass and waste valorisation for energy purposes. This includes the technologies for the control of atmospheric emissions and the management of solid residues of different energy conversion routes of the raw materials. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is then introduced and applied as a tool to evaluate the environmental implications of different energy conversion routes from waste and biomass.

Description of topics covered by the course

  1. Waste management scenario. The current waste generation and management in the world, EU and Italy. Emerging trends and future challenges.
  2. Feedstock characterization.Physical and chemical properties of waste materials.
  3. Recycling. Strategies and technologies for the recovery of materials from waste.
  4. Mechanical-biological treatment. MBT applied to the residual waste for the production of Solid Recovered Fuels (SRF) and for the recycling of materials
  5. Anaerobic digestion for biogas production: technological options, plant start up and operation
  6. Pollution control: technologies and configuration of flue gas treatment plants; solid and liquid residues. Environmental implications of SRF co-combustion in non-dedicated plants.
  7. Environmental assessment: environmental impact indicators; life-cycle assessment; assessment of biogenic vs. fossil CO2 emission.

Course organization

The class will be organized in lectures, precepts and seminars. A field visit will be arranged to biomass-/waste-to-energy plants.

Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

The evaluation will be based on the result of a mandatory final written exam (including theoretical questions and exercises) and an optional interview. Access to the oral interview is subjected to the satisfactory accomplishment of the written test.

An optional midterm exam will be held around the middle of the semester. A positive result in the midterm exam will substitute the first half of the written exams held during the first exam session.
