Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

Program

This Lab is a training arena that aims at developing students’ understanding about the profound changes that companies are currently facing due to the so-called 'societal challenges'.

Students also learn how companies are answering to these challenges by developing innovative paradigms aimed at answering to growing economic, social and environmental pressures.

As part of the Lab, students have the opportunity to work on real projects that aim at answering to this evolution of the context, applying in practice the concepts, ideas and methodologies that are thought in the stream’s core courses.

Objectives

This Lab aims at preparing students to:

  • Understand how rising ‘societal challenges’ are changing the way how companies operate and create value
  • Understand how companies are answering to these new trends through to the development of innovative business models, the creation of new forms of partnership, the exploitation of new product and process technologies
  • Develop a real project in a real company that is addressing the above trends, by defining and applying a comprehensive plan, following the implementation to selected solutions and evaluating short and long term impacts
  • Work in a multi-objective and multi-stakeholder context, with direct interaction with companies and other entities, that are pursuing the trade-offs between economic, social and environmental

Topics description

This Lab is articulated into a workshop of a week time (at the beginning of the course) and weekly sessions

The topics addressed in the first workshop are:

  • The grand transformation. How societal challenges and mega-trends are transforming the business world and modifying the way in which companies compete
  • Vertical analysis for selected challenges. Each of the selected challenges (Energy & Resource Management, Food & Nutrition, Education & Skills gap, Wellbeing in a Changing Society) will be deployed from different points of view in order to address: sociology of change, interpretive models, technological opportunities, breakthrough solutions implemented in the international setting through policy strategy and new social entrepreneurship.
  • Development of Social & Sustainable Business Model. During the exercise sessions, Social & Sustainable Business Models will be developed as a potential answers to the different societal challenges.

Weekly sessions are devoted to exercise, tutorials and assistance for supporting the development of projects with the partner companies. These sessions entail meetings and confrontations with organizations, companies, associations, internal and external stakeholders involved in the project. The projects focus on cases of key enabling technologies and social entrepreneurship

The topics addressed in the second workshop are:

  • What the main components are of complex decision making processes; limited power, limited information, dynamics
  • How actors, faced with this complexity, act and what effective and ineffective strategies are
  • The strategies to deal with this complexity and to apply them to real world cases
  • The personal competencies and skills to deal with this complexity
  • The cultural differences in the decision making game and to explore these differences
  • How to understand and use the power of the media in these processes

Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

The examination is articulated into two parts:

1)      Deliver a report on the company project work

2)      Present and discuss the project works and the assignments
