Synthetic program

The general objective of this integrated course is to provide the skills and the knowledge for the comprehension and the quali-quantitative analysis of catalytic processes, including the methodologies involved in the preparation and characterization of catalytic materials. Skills acquired at the end of the course are the capability to prepare and characterize heterogeneous catalysts, to perform catalytic tests and kinetic treatments, to understand the behavior of industrial catalytic reactors and to design catalytic reactions.

Program of "PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF CATALYTIC MATERIALS" part

1)       Objectives and course content

The course has the objective to provide the skills and knowledge for the comprehension and quali-quantitative analysis of catalytic processes used in the industrial chemistry, environmental protection, energetic field and others. In particular, after a general introduction on the industrial heterogeneous catalysis and catalysts, this part of the course will deal with the preparation and characterization of catalytic materials. 

2)       Subjects description

The part of the course "PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF CATALYTIC MATERIALS" deals with the most important methods to prepare catalysts and characterize them after preparation. In particular, after a general overview of the preparation method for bulk catalysts and supports, the attention will be focused on the theory and practice of (co)-precipitation method, sol-gel methods, impregnation and of other preparation techniques. Then, other unit operation for the preparation of heterogeneous catalysts (filtration drying, calcination...) will be considered. 

Then, the Chemico-physical characterization of catalysts will be treated. General aspects on the characterization of bulk and supported catalysts will be mentioned at first. Then, the attention will be focused on the morphological characterization (specific surface area and pore distribution), on the Adsorption techniques for the catalyst characterization (physical and chemical adsorption, models for adsorption isotherms, experimental techniques for the adsorption study). Finally, Spectroscopic and thermal techniques for the catalyst characterization will be considered: FTIR, Laser-Raman, UV-Vis, TG-DTA, DSC, XRD, EPR, SEM, TEM, ecc.. Chemical characterization: TPD, TPO, TPR, TPSR, ecc..

The course consists of lectures, numerical exercises, laboratory visits to university facilities and research laboratories. The exam consist of an interview at the end of the course
