Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

The course of Design Optioneering is offered with the aim to meet the challenge that comes from the digital era. The digitalization process in engineering and architecture offers so many opportunities that it needs to be part of an organized learning process.

The course is divided in a theoretical part and a practical one.

The theoretical part is grounded on the theory of parametric design and integrated design. The bases are: the researches in parametric architecture of Luigi Moretti (1950’s); the concept of integrated design, based on the researches of Sir Ove Arup (1970’s).

The practical part is based on technologies and processes such as Computational Design and Building Information Modelling (BIM). Those technologies, following the Hype Cycle of Gartner, are now arrived to the level of “plateau of productivity” and are integrated in the design environment.

By stressing the relations between parametric, integrated design and digital technologies, a new methodology in design will be proposed. This new methodology, based on the researches of Dominik Holzer and Steven Downing, is named Design Optioneering.

The bases of the Design Optioneering methodology will be provided by specific groups of lessons. The groups of lessons can be summarized in:

  1. Theory and methods of digital designs;
  2. Computational design. It will be approached by teaching specifics parametric software:
  • Geometry simulation using Grasshopper
  • Environmentally simulation using Ladybug
  • Acoustic simulation using Pachyderm
  • Form-finding simulation using Kangaroo
  • Structural simulation using Karamba
  • Geometry simulation using Python
  1. Exercises related to the use of those tools will be part of the course.
  2. Mathematics, logic and computer science will help the students to develop their computational skills;
  3. Digital fabrication: for the students it will be possible to use tools, such as 3d printers or cutting machine. The purpose will be to realize small mock up in the laboratory of Politecnico;
  4. Mix reality: for the students it will be possible to use tools for the realization of virtual mock up;

The singles lessons will be focused on the topics below:

o    Digitization of Architecture Engineering Construction (AEC) sector

o    Cases studies

o    Computational Design

o    Computational Modelling

o    Digital Fabrication

o    Mixed Reality

o    Data Modelling

o    Design optioneering

The order of the topics above follows a cumulative knowledge logic.

Each lesson will be organised in three parts:

-       the first part will be dedicated to the theory of the Design Optioneering methodology (Moretti, Arup, Oxman etc…);

-       the second part will be focused on the use of software and tools;

-       the third part will be dedicated to the students projects.

Special lessons, with experts of the topics treated during the course, will be organized.

At the end of the course the students will be able to approach their design by using logical constraints between data and design. Design by data, will be the main goal achieved during the course.

The Design Optioneering methodology will be used with the purpose to design a small pavilions and to optimize small parts of building, like panels of façade, structures, spaces organization. The optimization process will be defined according to specific requirements that will be delineated at the beginning of the student projects.

Design Optioneering approach will be used by the students, in their professional career, with the aim to evaluate different options in design and optimize consciously their projects.

Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

Evaluation of the student: the exam will be a powerpoint presentation, an A3 book, and a physical maquette.

The evaluation of the students will be based on the group project and on the individuals exercices.
