FABLAB

 

Context

Similar to the 18th and 19th century industrial revolution, we are, today, in a
process of societal change driven by the ‚digital revolution‘, that will signifcantly
change architecture and design and the processes of production. Nevertheless
while information technology and digital, rule-based, robotic processes already
dominate large parts of our private and business live, mostly unflexible, industrial
processes still primarily govern the production of goods.


But although standardized mass production still dominates large parts of our
designed environment - in various processes of creation and production, even
in architecture, digital techniques have helped in reinstating basic principles of
craft production in which material and form are interconnected in the tradition
of making. Therefore digital manufacturing processes are rather related to the
principals of crafts than industrial production as they emphasize the qualities
of the materials used and provide higher flexibility during the development and
production process.


With the integration of ‚digital production tools‘ in actual design and production
processes, the boundaries between design development and production become
increasingly blurred. In contrast to an concept of hierarchical design development
in this environment the design development process is driven by the process of
making: thinking by making. After the era of industrial production, the possibilities
of computer-aided design and manufacturing revive some fundamental
principles of traditional craft and inevitably lead to new design aesthetics.

 

Design task


Computational fabrication allows for a direct processing of digital designs into pysical
objects. This transformation - from bits to atoms - requiers specfic know-how
in the generation of the digital data and opens at the same time new possiblities for
the creation of spatial concepts. Hence, the seminar explores the conditions and
constraints as well as the perspectives for the design and manufacturing process
in architecture. Based on the 3D-modeling software Rhinoceros, two individual
spatial designs will be developed and produced with two different fabrication technologies
throughout the semester

Assesment Procedure and Deliverables:

1. Assessment: (group or individual) of the activities performed in the project workshop.

2. Oral Presentation: Presentation (group or individual) of the activities performed in the programme

For the presentation of the project a PDF-document has to be prepared,
explaining the starting point (initial idea), the concpet development (design
process) and the final result.

In addition the following files should be delivered:
Rhino-File (.3DM) and the 3D-Printing-File Export Format (.STL).
