Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

Contemporary cities are characterized by widespread processes of gentrification through which specific neighborhoods are physically and socially transformed to make them more attractive. Architecture and urban planning play a crucial role in this process as they are called to contribute to this change by providing new ideas about space and its association with sociality.

The course provides students with an exploration of the main social and physical transformations that are peculiar of gentrification processes taking place in contemporary cities. The course’s aim is giving the student critical and practical instruments to consider the social impact of current spatial and economical transformations of the city. This issue will be addressed both theoretically and empirically, through literature analysis and a specific empirical case study.

The course will be split in two parts. The first part will consider the main social aspects characterizing gentrification in contemporary cities, by reviewing the basic concepts elaborated by sociology to understand factors, configuration, meaning and impacts of gentrification. The second part will be based on students' group work and their presentations in class. The study area will be the city of Milan. Students will have to focus on a specific neighborhood and to combine mapping and qualitative observation techniques.

Attending students are required to prepare an oral presentation to be delivered in class, a paper and a final poster, in small groups according to the instructions given by the professor.

Invited speakers, field visits, or other materials for discussion will enrich the course. Active participation of students throughout the course will be encouraged and evaluated.
