MARINE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS DESIGN FOR MILAN

CONTENT

Having been canals, rivers and lakes in and out of the city, Milan has a considerably high potential to develop a marine transportation system which can be integrated into the existing urban network and surrounding settlements. There are valuable studies on this topic proposing new connections and designing various types of vessels such as a water taxi and a restaurant boat. However, a unique vessel design or in other words, a Milanese type of boat still needs to be developed. Within the scope of this workshop, students are expected to design a vessel with its needed components like the stops and services both for the inhabitants and tourists and the design should refer to Milan lifestyle. After the brief has been given, student groups will make a research on the case first, then the process will go on with the discussions and board critics. Student participation during the studio work is essential and visualizations would be the main outputs as well as sketches, diagrams and study models.

- Students will be able to find out the potentials and identity of a city and improve it by design.

- Students will be able to propose a unique marine transportation system solution including the design of vessel and land services.

- Students will be able to design a marine vessel by considering the norms and standarts of human ergonomy.

- Students will be able to take an equal and active role in a group by experiencing a collaborative work with the team friends.
