“Design critique” for the next “im-material culture”

The course aims to guide students toward the development of a critical and interpretative ability of design processes and methodologies through the lens of the concept of innovation, analyzed at the theoretical dimension and by the cultural approach that underlies.
In particular the analysis of the concept of innovation is not addressed only from the historical and evolutionary point of view (innovation history, history of technique) but transposed into the contemporary dimension to understand the concrete impacts and implications of design and and to be able to translate, in terms of actuality and practical-operational potential, some constants and variables of the complexity of the dynamics of innovation in order to adreess the project in emerging areas.
Taken on the basis of the reflection it is the fact that the contemporary design has to operate, thanks - but not solely- to the use of digital and smart technologies, in a meta-material world that goes beyond the materiality and often designs an increased materiality (which is obviously related to both artifacts and services, but also to processes and devices, physical but also conceptual) that present, equally important to the physical one, an intangible level related to communication (language, narratives), processes, symbolic meanings, relations (social dimension), temporal, fictional but also frictional qualities (conflictual because multiple interpretable etc). This new materiality, far from dematerializes, is increasingly occupying the real scene, through meaningful interactions and cultural values that go beyond the artefacts dimension and create new behaviours and life models, involving empowered people and skilled community.
In this transformation it is necessary deemed an updated theoretical and critical reflection on the concepts of innovation revisiting its statutes both from a historical point of view and from the anthropological-social one, envisioning and identifying elements of continuity and discontinuity, focusing on a design literacy based on humanistic perspective and situated context (design culture vs design thinking; diffuse vs expert design…), in order to elaborate a “design critique” for for the next “im-material culture”, where next implies the concept of proximity as well as of distance of future, in terms of time and physical space.

The course will share the teaching approach and some Thematic Unit with the course of Prof. Stefano Maffei in the parallel section

Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

Didactic modalities
The course will be based on thematic units on different topics (i.e., “Italian way of design”; “Culture driven innovation”; “Design fiction/Design narrations/Critical design”; “The phygital and the artefacts”; “Remix and feedback culture, open knowledge, copy-right/left”) consisting of reading of selected texts (essays, book excerpts, articles), video materials, site links, prepared, introduced and commented by the teacher.
The course will also propose the experimental teaching approach of the flipped classroom in which students attending will be engaged in an active part (exercise in groups), to build an inquiry-based learning process. This process is aimed to support the knowledge sharing among students in a peer-to-peer logic, reflecting the dynamics of a open knowledge society in which the roles of teaching/teacher and larning/students are always more blurred and interwined. In addition it encorauge an euristic perspective on knowledge embodiment by empirical practice (problem-based learning, search versus re-search).
The exercise will be based on re-elaboration activities of the thematic units addressing analysis, evaluation, application of contents by students interpretation. Groups will act as Design rapporterus developing the choosen thematic unit on three levels:
Analysis: “The state of design: criticism on context and consequences of design”
Evaluation: “Dismantling/ discussing design”
Creation/application: “Curatorial design”.
