Make government great again!

Marco Steinberg & Paola Trapani, with Maria Tasca

DRAFT ABSTRACT

”Make government great again!” is a cheeky response to rising Trumpism: the co-opting of populist forces for other purposes. Redirecting these forces towards positive change while innovating government itself is possibly the largest design challenge of our times.

The context we live in is changing radically. Governments, cities and regions across the world are facing unprecedented pressure to do more with less. Growing populations, fiscal austerity, social inequality, and changing demographics are just some of the forces putting extraordinary pressures on the public sector to transform itself. In the “more for less” quest, the point of emphasis is shifting from improving existing solutions, towards the need to fundamentally redesigning new ones. How do we enable the emergence of new and innovative solutions? What are some of the strategic questions, challenges and opportunities that we face in redesigning our future? What might “innovative government” look like?

There is a growing need to apply design to help governments make better decision, deliver better services, and make smarter decisions.

While undoubtedly not everyone wants to be a politician or a public servant, the workshop will expose students to the use of design to change the models of how we govern, improve the quality of our services, and how we run political campaigns.

Students will work in teams to deliver the following designs:

- a new concept of government

- a new service

- a new movement
