TEMPORARY and EPHEMERAL spatial design actions.

The course will deal with the actions of Spatial Design in urban areas, with particular attention to the intermediate, evolving, residual and often neglected spaces, by giving value to the aspects of performance, adaptability and reversibility of the interventions.

The word design (hence understanding it in its most systemic sense, but still incredibly experimental and poetic) becomes for us the founding approach, jointly with the word spatial (… for the space, … of the space).

In particular, it intends to explore the EPHEMERAL components of the project, not only in terms of the temporary nature of the interventions, but investigating and including THE DIGITAL COMPONENT of the spatial design (augmented reality AR / virtual reality VR).

Take into account a future more and more “Internet of things” and connected, the physical, material and emotional components along with the quality of the spaces are becoming increasingly important, because further blurred with the virtual one.

Considering what overall above stated, we are provided different hints for reflection about the theme of space and urban space as an interior (hospitable and supportive), an emotional and performative space, sometimes close (but not equal) to the artistic experiences, in the contemporary cities, continuously subjects to great transformation processes.

By referring also to the radical studies of Colin Rowe and Fred Koetter about the Collage City [1] “… the authors, rejecting the grand utopian visions of "total planning" and "total design," propose instead a "collage city" which can accommodate a whole range of utopias in miniature…" , the STUDIO will investigate this phenomenon through a actual, critical and experimental approach, testing in which way the physical, but also ephemeral aspect of public/private spaces could become the ideal “stages” for the story telling of a becoming NEO-COLLAGE CITY. A city of fragments from the past, present and future, taking inspiration from working examples in existing cities: some scientific, others picturesque; some antique, others contemporary; some may be rational, whilst others disordered.

The NEO-COLLAGE CITY would offer the poetics of a story telling with the juxtaposition and layering of smaller designs into a whole; a post-“post-modern composition” – lacking of prescription – made of remembrances, shifted contexts, recycled meanings, metamorphoses, future visions, …, allowing the city to create itself, to read itself and to form its own meanings from unedited or borrowed fragments, towards a continuous update of the environment.

All these different interpretations offer the opportunity to learn and to practice:

  • some theoretical approaches to the temporary and ephemeral urban design in the “Internet of things” Era;
  • the knowledge of the different technologies related to interactive exhibitions, video environment, live performances, by meeting also different experts and designers;
  • the value of design experimentation, working in a international environment mentored by a team of professors and practitioners with different expertise, towards the idealization of tangible and achievable design solutions;
  • in various locations of the currently and every day evolving city of Milano, also in relationship with associations and centres for urban innovation and artistic production.

The STUDIO foresees the production of experimental models, video and graphic/visual representations aimed to set up the exhibition <DESIGN the NEO-COLLAGE CITY>.
