Over the past one hundred years the field of Art has radically changed. Each aspect of its production has been involved: the contents, the techniques, the goals, the role of the Art itself - and that of the artists - within the society. Starting from this legacy the contemporary Art shows itself as a large experimental field where the condition of the present is continuously, recorded, analysed, and interpreted.

The course describes this process on a chronological base, from the Avant-garde up to the latest works, according to a model largely adopted in literature. It traces three main lines of research: the first on the nature of the space; the second on the use of matter; the third on the role of the body. These are issues that often deal with the practice of design and therefore offer interesting opportunities of reflection and comparison. On the other hand they permit a wider exploration on the connexions between the Art and other creative activities such as theatre, filmmaking, music, fashion, advertising.

Beside the lessons, the course provides seminars with the participation of artists, curators and art experts.

Negli ultimi cento anni il campo dell'arte è attraversato da radicali trasformazioni. Ogni aspetto del fare artistico è coinvolto: i contenuti, le tecniche, le finalità, il ruolo stesso dell’arte – e degli artisti – nella società. Muovendo da tale eredità l'arte contemporanea si presenta come un esteso campo di sperimentazione in cui la condizione del presente è, continuamente, registrata, analizzata e interpretata.

Il corso descrive questi mutamenti adottando un criterio cronologico, dalle Avanguardie ai lavori più recenti, secondo un modello storiografico ampiamente consolidato in letteratura. Propone tre livelli di lettura: il primo sulla natura dello spazio, il secondo sull’uso della materia, il terzo sul coinvolgimento del corpo. Si tratta di questioni che spesso attengono alla pratica del progetto e offrono quindi interessanti occasioni di riflessione e di confronto. D’altra parte essi consentono una esplorazione più ampia sulle connessioni tra l’arte ed altre attività creative come il teatro, il cinema, la musica, la moda, la pubblicità.

Alle lezioni si affiancano seminari di approfondimento con la partecipazione di artisti, curatori ed esperti d’arte.

Two in-course tests are required, the first one is related to Modern Art movements up to the 1960s, the second to contemporary production. They consist of a work of analysis and interpretation of a specific topic (such as an artistic movement or an artist's work) of which the students are asked to find out the influence on contemporary creative production.

In-course tests are compulsory and have to be submitted on the dates set by the schedule of the course, which will be provided at the beginning of the semester. The assessments obtained in these tests, account the 60% of the final evaluation grade. The remaining 40% will result from the final exam, consisting of a discussion on the course contents.

An in-depth knowledge of the course contents as well as of the bibliography is required, therefore attendance, though not compulsory, is strongly recommended.

Students who cannot, for whatever reason, attend the lessons, however, have to submit the in-course tests in the scheduled dates.

Durante il semestre sono previste due prove in itinere, una relativa ai movimenti artistici fino agli anni ’60, l’altra alle ricerche contemporanee. Si tratta di un lavoro di analisi e interpretazione di un argomento specifico (come un movimento artistico o il lavoro di un artista), di cui si chiede agli studenti di scoprire l'influenza sulla produzione creativa contemporanea.

Le prove in itinere sono obbligatorie e vanno redatte nei tempi stabiliti dal calendario del corso, che sarà reso noto all'inizio del semestre. Le valutazioni ottenute nelle prove in itinere, rappresentano il 60% del voto di valutazione finale. Il restante 40% sarà il risultato della prova conclusiva, che consiste in una discussione sui contenuti del corso.

Si richiede una conoscenza approfondita dei contenuti del corso e della bibliografia, pertanto, sebbene non obbligatoria la frequenza alle lezioni è fortemente consigliata.

Gli studenti che non possono, per qualsiasi motivo, frequentare le lezioni, sono tenuti, in ogni caso, a presentare le prove in itinere nelle date in programma.
