The objective of the workshop is to develop the ability of integrating some of the most fundamental technical competences and awareness supporting the architectural design processes. More specifically, it will aim to develop and integrate structural competences, technological competences and competences aimed to design and operate geometric surveying of the building site, to monitor its structural behaviour along time, and to trace it out during the construction phase.
The activities of the workshop will be structured around an architectural project centered on building design and will be integrated with a schedule of lectures.
In those design activities a performance-based design approach will be adopted. This will imply that they will encourage that the design decisions at all levels and phases are made on the basis of the performances which are expected to be linked to the available design options.
The design activities will encourage the movement of earth as a viable design solution for both the buildings and their surroundings and will aim to environmental and economic sustainability and to technical appropriateness, constructability and robustness in the face of uncertainties. In this context, during the course, standard procedures will be outlined for the structural design of building, allowing for the structural assessment of steel, concrete and wood elements.
A key aspect of the workshop is that, in all work phases, it will aim to an understanding of the building site and its relations with the candidate built forms. In particular, the workshop will provide some basic tools for the analysis of the urban or rural context where the new building has to be inserted. This will involve the use of digital maps and other types of geographic information, including the analysis of cadastral data. Secondly, the technologies for surveying the portion of land candidate to host the project will be presented, and some basic topographic and photogrammetric methods presented. When possible, this tasks will be applied to the workshop main project. Once the project is defined, a plan for tracing it out on the construction ground will be drawn. Finally, the design of the building will entail some procedures for monitoring the structural safety of the building to be applied along the building serviceability. This task will be accomplished in cooperation with the analysis of the structural design of the building.
The final product of the workshop will be constituted by drawings at various scales - which will include the detailed construction scales - and by a report in which the adopted design solutions will be justified.

The evaluation of the works will take place on the basis of the production of drawings and reports with which the projects defined during the workshop will be presented at the end of the work cycle.
