Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

Workshop contents

The main theme of this workshop is the architectural design in some places where exist many situations of great emergency. We'll consider some different type of emergency. On the one hand, we'll study several problems related to some situation of great emergency in developing countries, and, on the other hand, we'll consider an emergency connected to a specific dispute and a particular culture.

This workshop proposes two different project areas: the first one is an important axis in the district of Caia, in the centre of the Mozambique; the second one is the area of the Middle East and, in particular, the area of the Gaza Strip. The first theme concerns the construction of a little settlement linked to the axis Gamba/Deve-Licoma with some structures for emergency, such as an health post and other elements for primary health care. The second theme is about the construction of some structures off the coast of the Gaza Strip: these off-shore elements could be realized in a Free Trade Zone and they could provide a solution to the problem of supply essential goods for civil population in that area.

Teaching format

This workshop is divided into two parts; the first one consists in some lectures and discussions about the project areas. These activity will be supported by a workshop activity to introduce the specific project. The second part of the workshop is focused on the individual project proposal and, also in this case, this activity could be supported by some specific lessons.

Module description of THEORY AND DESIGN OF CONSTRUCTIONS AND STRUCTURES

The purpose of the module is the acquisition of the core concepts of statics and resistance of materials through the study of physical and mathematical principles and the relevant methods of calculation, through their principal applications to structures of architectural interest for projects aimed at assisting community development, in particular by promoting technological cooperation for the independent and sustainable development of marginality contests around the world. The aim is to provide a basic knowledge of the relationship between the architectural and structural aspects of a building. Throughout the lab experience the student will be able to learn the basic principles of the structural aspect of a construction, by applying simple mechanical observations and notional knowledge. During the theoretical and practical lessons, the students will approach the “design concept” by the structural point of view but their work will also be coordinated with the other subjects of the Laboratory. The aim will be to provide a basic understanding of the mathematical model that is the basis of a structural analysis. The stability of a structure will be analysed using a mathematical quantitative model.
