The Architectural Preservation Studio will deal with the conservation of a building recognized as architectural Heritage. If heritage conservation is a continuous challenge to commonplaces, to standard solutions, to established beliefs, if the learning attitude is the attitude to unlearn and to get free from the bounds of misunderstood traditions, this could be the most effective subject to stimulate new habits of thought; to re-think our preservation model and to prove the conditions under which it continues to be effective. The survey of the chosen case-study will be conducted in order to gather data on both quantitative and qualitative aspects of the building. In addition to measurements of lengths, heights and computation of the geometric forms, students have to collect data on technological aspects, construction materials, on décor, colours, and all tangible features of the monument. Emphasis will be given to the quantification of the decay. This evaluation will come from the comparison between the recent measured surveys and the hypothetical initial form of the building which both the historical documents and the critical analysis of the building suggest. Any man-made object is the product of a specific culture related to a geographical area and an historical period; therefore the interpretation of the built geometries have to be related to the contemporary scientific knowledge and the local metric system. Architectural design is based on the definition of forms and assignment of dimensions. The choice of the numbers shaping the size and proportions of the building is a fundamental step of the design process. Geometrical and numerical patterns are personal rules that designers create and follow to embed order and beauty in their projects. Observation of the visible historical alterations of the original design will help unveil its primary geometrical diagram, and reciprocally the disclosed pattern will help understanding and quantifying the formal and cultural decay. Representation will make use of any of the 2D and 3D projections. 3D views and 3D schemes will be particularly useful to represent the shapes of the single interior volumes and indoor spaces. However the students will evaluate which representation technique will best serve each of their communication necessities. The aim of the Studio is to provide students with operational and conceptual tools they need to develop a preservation project. At the same time the students will get a full awareness of restoration as a part of a broader conservation strategy, including investigation, prevention, maintenance, as well as of the role of the architect in the preservation process of cultural heritage. In a first phase the Studio will check and update student’s competences about: - knowledge of legislation on preservation, also in comparison between different countries; - knowledge of theoretical positions in the current debate on preservation; - knowledge of modern and traditional building materials and their degradation mechanisms; - knowledge of structural behavior of historical masonry buildings In a second phase the Studio will develop: - the tools to develop and prepare technical drawings and technical papers of a restoration project. - the logic of a design method capable of achieving a balance between conscious new needs and the reality of the layered history and identity of the object; - the logic of permanence and change that every project involves: completeness / fragmentation, authentic / original, selection / stratification, new / old; - the methodological tools for a problem-solving approach (rather than pre-fab technical solutions); - the tools to design integrated solutions for conservation and sustainable enhancement of built cultural heritage.

Students will carry on their project in small groups.The project will be developed through on site trips and classwork, entailing preventive study of the scientific and theoretical backgrond. During the classwork the students will take part in discussions about recognition of values, different protection measures, multiple roles of heritage in development models. Oral examination will be focused on the discussion of the project and an individual check on theoretical, scientific and methodological background.
