Computing Infrastructures

SSD: ING/INF 05

CFU: 5

MIX DIDATTICO: 30 lezione – 20 esercitazione

Description

Modern large-scale datacenters require the seamless integration of different components - applications, computation nodes, storage devices, and networks - into one computing infrastructure. The course covers the basics of current datacenters architectures, ranging from the analysis of the single components to the global infrastructure. The focus is on the foundations required to understand the design of computing infrastructures that are scalable, available, secure and flexible at the same time. Virtualization, cloud computing and storage systems are analyzed in depth to show how they can be used to support challenging tasks such as big-data applications and high-performance computing.

Topics

  1. Computing infrastructures (14 h)

-      Components: application services, enterprise-grade computer systems, network configuration and network devices, storage

-      Reliability and availability

-      Scalability and performance: performance indices, operational analysis, performance measurement (performance counters, monitoring tools), benchmarking and load testing

  1. Storage systems (12 h)

-      Disks (hdd, ssd)

-      RAID architectures

-      RAID performance and availability

-      DAS, NAS and SAN

  1. Virtualization (12 h)

-      System virtualization: basic concepts, technologies, hypervisors, hardware support, vm scheduling

-      Storage virtualization

-      Network virtualization

  1. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) (12 h)
