Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

Fashion and communication are two areas that have always worked in pair to convey a style, a brand or a single product. The course is aimed at providing students with a clear perspective about communication and the media industry peculiarities with special regard to the fashion world. It is made up of two parts.

Part 1: Media and society (Oct. 8 to Dec. 5)

This general part provides an overview of the many elements of the contemporary media scene, their features, the way they function and the way they can be used. Topics will be: what is communication; media texts; media institutions; media audiences; advertising; new media and social media; globalization and the media.

The study of the book Media and Society (by Graeme Burton) will be facilitated through group works. All groups will deliver 3 different comments for each chapter: a) something that has been to hard to understand; b) something that we don’t agree with; c) application of a chapter's contents to the fashion system. Groups will be alternately in charge to present each chapter and lead the discussion.

Part 2: Theory of communication, two exercises (Dec. 10 to Jan. 30)

A more focused part aims at exploring, by means of exercises, some specific cases of use of communication means in the fashion world.

Exercise N 1: Subcultures and new media. The role of social media networks in setting lifestyles will be addressed enquiring situations like fandoms of pop celebrities or fashion brands. We will try to interpret them according to the concept of subculture.

Exercise N 2: Fashion Styling. The profession of fashion stylist will be scrutinized through the analysis of interviews to London fashion stylists, including a comparison with Milanese fashion stylists and a comment about the relationship between fashion styling and fashion blogs.

Further literature will be provided along the classes.

Part 2: A report for each exercise must be submitted and presented and discussed. The report and its presentation will be evaluated. The mark will result from the mean of both exercise evaluations.
