Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

The course of Urban and Architectural Regeneration focuses on how the two key issues of conservation and sustainability relate to each other in the context of historic sites.

The aim of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge, cultural premises and methodologies to approach the conservation of cultural heritage (both buildings and landscape), together with the evaluation of its possible structural- functional- and energy efficiency upgrade.

The topics will focus on:

  • Landscape as a system at different scales: reading and assessing historical transformations
  • Conservation and valorization of cultural heritage (tangible and intangible) and sustainability;
  • Valorization of rural heritage: urban agriculture and landscape
  • Environmental policies and European environmental legislation
  • Fundamentals of environmental economics and energy efficiency
  • Complex systems approaches and analysis

The course aims to increase students' knowledge on the Italian culture on the basis of cultural heritage, with a specific attention to the rural architecture and landscape.

Field experience will allow studentsto establish cross-disciplinary execution of research, survey, documentation, visual analysis, assessment in order to describe the historical character of the study cases with a focus on integrity, authenticity and cultural value. The students will also learn how to carry out a SWOT analysis on the basis of environmental, social, economic and institutional aspects related to specific cases and legislation and how to calculate the Total Economic Value and to assign monetary value to public goods.

The course is organized in lessons, group activities and on site experiences (coursework).

if needed more references will be supplied during the course.
