COURSE PROGRAM

Topics and aims

The studio will face the issue of reconverting the area of the actual Mantua’s prison, located in the center of the city. This area offers a extraordinary opportunity in filing up project in a dense, historically relevant neighbourhood, new activities as residential, offices and lacking services. The unique location, is going to offer an extraordinary study case, to understand the historic city and the relations between existing, the old and the new, the contemporary additions.

The student will be asked to analyse the area with the support of different methodologies – ‘live’ experience, such as excursions and site pictures, and the analysis of urban data’s and maps – to better focus the threats and the opportunities, the links with the surroundings, the natural and urban environment. This analysis will lead the student to the design of a master plan of a great complexity, where housing will coexist with public open spaces, green areas, several facilities, small and medium size services, commercial and crafts activities. Some of these buildings will be then designed into detail.
