This course integrates a wide spectrum of knowledge from different disciplines (including computer architecture, networking, security, availability, performance). It accounts for 10 CFU and is composed of 2 modules, each one of 5 CFU running for the entire semester. 

Module 1: Computer Systems. Recently, new technologies have appeared that have definitely changed how internet and the web are used. Cloud computing, service computing and engineering, Hardware as a Service, Infrastructure as a Service, Platrform as a Service, Software as a Service, are the basis of what is generally called "Enterprise3.0". Scalability, reliability, availability and security are the main features that must be provided to users of these architectures. 

Module 2: Performance Evaluation. The correct sizing of a computer system, from small-scale installations to large-scale datacenters, allows the delivering of top-quality services while keeping hardware cost under control. Performance evaluation techniques are required to find the optimal compromise between hardware costs and quality of service. The module is structured in theoretical and practical lessons. Theoretical lessons provide an overview on queuing network models that are the building blocks for the performance evaluation of IT systems. Practical lessons provide an overview of the performance aspects of modern computer systems and provide examples of performance management based on real world tools.
