Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

The course will focus on understanding the nuances of interactive AI-based systems and the potential problems they can pose to the users if naively designed. The emphasis will be on understanding how HCI methods and principles can help design AI systems, which implies considering who AI systems are built for and evaluating how well those systems are working.

After a short introduction to basic concepts of HCI, the course will highlight characteristics of AI systems that can have impacts on the users and whose design requires the knowledge of principles, methods, and interaction paradigms that can enhance the interaction with such systems. Participants will, therefore, learn how to use a conceptual/methodological framework that can help i) identify issues that users can encounter when interacting with AI-based technologies (false expectations, biases in decision-making, limitation of functionalities), and ii) approach such issues during the design of AI systems by means of HCI principles and methods.

The evaluation will focus on the main design and evaluation principles presented during the course. The students will work in groups on exercises (a reading panel, a design worksheet, the prototyping of a conversational agent) that will be the object of the evaluation. At the end of the course, they will be asked to give a presentation on the results of their group work.

The lessons will be organized into six modules mixing frontal lectures, reading panels involving the course participants, and hands-on sessions focusing on the design and prototyping of UIs for AI-based systems: 

1. Introduction to Human-AI Interaction. Introduction to User-Centered Design, Usability and User eXperience (UX). Presentation of topics for possible students’ projects. Reading assignments.

2. Designing Human-AI Interaction: Substitution vs Augmentation; Direct Manipulation vs Interface Agents; Balancing Computer Automation and Human Control.

3. Explainability for AI systems: Data, bias, and trust. Reading panel.

4. Paradigms for Human-AI Interaction: smart interfaces, conversational interfaces; anthropomorphism and its effect (uncanny valley), guidelines for Human-AI interaction. Reading panel.

5. Hands-on sessions: design and prototyping of conversational agents

6. Project presentation by student groups; wrap-up
