Course Title SLIDING MODE CONTROL: THEORY AND APPLICATIONS
Course Type MONO-DISCIPLINARY COURSE
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Course Description Among the possible approaches to control design and estimation under severe uncertainty conditions, variable structure control with sliding modes appears to be endowed with many advantageous features, making it a good candidate choice in critical scenarios such as, for instance, the hybrid and/or impulsive systems framework, or the infinite-dimensional systems area. In fact, sliding mode (SM) controllers/observers and their enhanced versions based on higher-order sliding mode (HOSM) techniques represent an effective choice for handling bounded uncertainties/disturbances and unmodeled dynamics, while mitigating the chattering effect that qualifies as the major drawback of conventional (i.e., first order) sliding mode control. In recent years, the HOSM control techniques have undergone an explosive growth and diffusion, and fundamental and important progresses in both its theoretical foundations and successful application to practical problems of engineering relevance were presented in the literature. This course aims at providing both the theoretical foundations of first and second order sliding mode control design, and at discussing application examples in which such approaches have been successfully applied. Further, the recent developments leading to switched and adaptive solutions to enhance the performance of second order sliding mode controllers will be presented, and the performance improvement enabled by such solutions will be shown by means of selected case studies taken from the automotive (Prof. Mara Tanelli from Politecnico di Milano will give a seminar on this aspect during the course), robotics and smart grid control contexts, in order to show practical application cases in relevant application domains.
