Course Title RADAR REMOTE SENSING: PRINCIPLES, APPLICATIONS, AND INTEGRATION WITH COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
Course Type MONO-DISCIPLINARY COURSE
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Course Description The course will be divided into two parts. The first is mainly about radar remote sensing systems, while the second regards advances in the integration between radar and communication systems. In the first part, several topics will be discussed, including: - Introduction to basics radar concepts: the chirp signal, radar equation, radar cross section (RCS), frequency bands, wave-matter interaction, mono-dimensional ranging, range ambiguity, and wavenumbers in radar imaging. - Array processing: dimensioning of an array given resolution constraints and size of the field of view. Fourier and super-resolution methods for Direction of Arrival (DoA) estimation, Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) array. - Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) processing: the moving platform to improve resolution, SAR focusing using Time-Domain Back-Projection (TDBP), and the effect of trajectory errors in SAR imaging. - Applications of radar and SAR: imaging, Interferometric SAR (InSAR) for landslides monitoring, earthquake analysis, Digital Elevation Model (DEM) estimation, the Permanent Scatterer (PS) technique, SAR Tomography for forest height retrieval, and for glacier analysis. The second part will analyze the integration between radar and communication systems. In particular: - The basics of the Joint Communication & Sensing (JC&S) paradigm will be provided, including vehicle-to-anything (V2X) communications concepts. - Waveform design for JC&S - Applications of JC&S: UAV-based imaging and communication for search and rescue applications in complex scenarios and high-altitude platforms (HAP) as communication relays for high-speed and efficient communication networks. Connected cars and automotive radar.
