Tipo Insegnamento MONODISCIPLINARE
Crediti Formativi Universitari (CFU) 5.0
Programma sintetico The aims consist in deepening the topics of linear-elastic and elastic-plastic Fracture Mechanics, fatigue crack propagation within a cutting-edge range of fields. This course gives particular emphasis on applications to biological materials, examples include bone, wood, cartilage... The study of the fracture of these materials has two important practical consequences: firstly, understanding damage modalities of biological tissues would be helpful in medical treatments and in the prevention of stress fractures. Secondly, the identification of fracture mechanisms can be a crucial aid in developing new materials and structures in light of bioinspiration. One example is the design of novel materials arising from the study of toughening micro-mechanisms in bones or nacres. The overarching aim is to combine the expertise in fracture mechanics obtained by engineering materials with the lessons learnt from biological materials and vice versa. To achieve these goals the course considers the main theoretical topics and the experimental aspects of Fracture Mechanics including several examples and case studies from different fields.
