The course will provide an insight into contemporary algorithmic methodologies for the analysis of data - small or big - within the framework of the statistical theory of inference. Perusing the book by Efron and Hastie (2016), "Computer Age Statistical Inference", Cambridge University Press, the course will distil two and half centuries of data analytic experience into a modern introduction to the current ideas and arguments of statistics and data science.
Students will be required to work, individually or in team, on a real world data analysis project which should explore and put to work some of the methods and algorithms illustrated during the course, or some different and novel methods of data science not part of the course contents but deemed by the class and the instructior to be an eligible and stimulating topic for a course in statistical inference in the computer age. |
