Wearable and nearable technologies offer limitless opportunities in empowering and enhancing multiple aspects of our daily lives in fitness, sport, human-augmentation, entertainment, medicine, health monitoring, etc. These technologies take advantage of a variety of miniature sensors, flexible circuitry, smart textiles, and packaging technologies. In this course, students will learn variety of topics from design, prototyping, and evaluation of wearable and nearable technologies to making an information decision based on data collected from the devices. The course is a hands-on course that teaches the topics through providing an opportunity for students to work in multi-disciplinary groups. Students will work in groups of four comprising of students from various PhD courses (e.g. biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, electronic engineering, computer science), where each student will be in charge of sharing the knowledge of their specific filed with their team, hence simulating a real-world experience. Through four guided hands-on modules students will learn to identify and use sensors to meet the required design criteria. In each module the students will develop wireless wearables with small footprints, evaluate their power consumption and usability, and develop the accompanying user-interface. The students will then work on an open-ended project and develop a wearable of their choosing. |
