Programma sintetico The University as Patron of Cutting-Edge Architecture is the title of a conference held at MIT back in May 2004: a heated debate on the (then) newly built Stata Center by Frank Gehry, enacted by Gehry himself, Robert Venturi and James Ackerman, three leading figures of the international architectural scene of the time. Frank Gehry evoked his grandfathers Talmudic learning, set on a constant inquiry, which lead to the final essence-the Golden Rule, for his design process pursuit: "being a good neighbour, respecting the architecture around me". Robert Venturi instead implied that campus was a community and not a personal stage set, opposing the old romantic idea of the artist as being original in order to be good. This debate opened perspectives still being researched, and pursued, in a larger scope. Over the last sixteen years, enhanced by new social and environmental needs, architecture has been increasingly challenged to come to terms with efficient use of natural resources, meeting a number of parameters to be certified as sustainable: i.e. siting, water management, energy efficiency, use of building materials, environmental comfort. Today, the notion of "cutting-edge architecture" splits up into thematic fragments, each corresponding to a specific discipline dealing with demanding built environments. How did architects entail this set of problems as triggers for innovative design solutions? What can we understand today by innovation in architecture within social responsibility? How can we match sustainability with spatial syntax and aesthetic expression? The course bridges these key issues, as approached from two different viewpoints set on multidisciplinary inquiry: energy efficiency and architectural design. PhD candidates are driven to argue and frame their viewpoints outside the "comfort zone" of their major disciplinary field. The course aims at testing, and eventually consolidating, a ground for cross-disciplinary debate. The idea is to question "composition" as a consolidated body of critical knowledge, mapping innovative approaches in the different fields, as fundamental complements to building efficiency.
