Course Title |
FIBER REINFORCED MATERIALS: MANUFACTURING, MECHANICAL PROPERTIES, MODELLING, APPLICATIONS |
Course Type |
MONO-DISCIPLINARY COURSE |
Credits (CFU / ECTS) |
5.0 |
Course Description |
The course covers manufacturing, mechanical properties, modelling and applications of fiber reinforced composite materials. It targets engineering and natural science PhD students, who is interested in acquiring understanding of what are composite materials, how they are made and how their properties can be assessed for design of components and products in different areas (civil engineering, automotive, aerospace, biomaterials).
The outline of the course is:
1. Introduction
2. Fibres and matrices
3. Manufacturing
4. Micromechanics of long fibre composites
5. Micromechanics of short fibre composites
6. Modelling of manufacturing processes and mechanical properties
7. Applications
The course intends to provide the background on the main features of fiber reinforced composites, from the components to the manufacturing, from the mechanical properties' estimation to the applications.
The students are supposed to acquire:
-the knowledge on the wide range of available fiber reinforced materials, and the different manufacturing techniques;
-the theoretical background on the modelling the mechanical behaviour, as well as the modelling of some aspect of the manufacturing process;
-the application of such materials in some industrial contexts. |
