Course Description The development of innovative materials opens new opportunities to the design of multifunctional aerospace and space systems, allowing reduced weights, thereby improving the overall system efficiency. However, the implementation of materials with functional properties in aerospace structures is not a straightforward process and it requires the integration of the different engineering disciplines involved in the design. The course provides the basis to develop and study novel materials in order to fully understand and exploit the opportunities given by enhanced mechanical and functional properties in subsystems design representing requirements of aerospace structures. Examples of material classes for potential applications in aerospace structural applications are: - Self-healing materials. Materials able to autonomously repair damages such as cracks and crack-initiating defects prior to catastrophic structural failure. - Functionally graded materials. Material showing a continuous or discontinuous modification of mechanical or functional properties along one or more dimensions. - Shape memory materials. Materials able to change shape triggered by an external stimulus such as stress or temperature change.
