Programma sintetico The optical and optoelectronic properties of semiconductor nanostructures can be tailored by quantum confinement and strain effects. Starting from the band structure of bulk semiconductor the impact of low-dimensionality and symmetry reduction on optical properties will be evaluated within the k-dot-p and envelope function approximation. Case studies covering both epitaxially grown and chemically synthesized nanostructures will be considered. In more details the lectures will cover the following topics. - Semiconductor band structure within the k-dot-p method with a focus on spin-orbit interaction and valence band states. Numerical solution of the 8-band k-dot-p Hamiltonian. Optical selection rules for circularly polarized light and spin orientation. - Quantum confinement effects within the envelope function approximation. Numerical calculation using the shooting method. - Excitonic effects in nanostructures. Calculation of the exciton binding energy and radius with the energy minimization method. Electro-optic modulation and the quantum confined Stark effect. - Intraband optical transitions. Working principle of the quantum cascade laser and quantum well infrared photodetectors for mid-infrared light emission/detection. - Excitonic effects in organic nanostructures, such as conjugated polymers, graphene nanostructures (quantum dots and nanoribbons), and carbon nanotubes. - Excitonic effects in novel nanostructured materials, such as metal-halide perovskites and monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (e.g. MoSs and WS2). - Optical and optoelectronic properties of heavily doped semiconductor nanostructures.
