Course Description |
The aim of the course is to provide PhD students with general concepts and updated information on advanced
experimental methods relevant to the development of conventional and nuclear power systems. The course
program will cover applications related to the measurement of thermo-fluid-mechanic quantities, under both
steady and unsteady regimes, with single phase or two-phase flows, turbulent and reactive conditions.
A list of issues is the following:
- Pressure measurements: dynamic response considerations
- Temperature measurements with probes: applications in two-phase flows, reactive mixtures, high velocity and
temperature flows
- Temperature measurement by thermal radiation: basic principles, infrared thermometers, thermal video
systems, system calibration, sensors for power system control
- Heat flux measurements
- Flow visualization: shadow and schlieren, 2-D laser sheet visualization, speckle photography
- Flow measurement: laser-Doppler and Phase-Doppler anemometry (LDA, PDA), particle imaging
anemometry (PIV)
- Laser thermometry: Rayleigh and Raman scattering, laser induced fluorescence (LIF)
- Analysis of soot and nanoparticles: laser extinction and laser induced incandescence (LII), laser scattering,
mass spectrometry and spectrophotometry.
The course includes laboratory sections and numerical exercises.
Note: the specific program of the course will be defined every year according with students curricula and their
main research interest. |
