The course presents logical modelling and simulation analysis of complex systems as a methodology for empirical research. The methodology is presented in the framework of Systems Engineering, providing a complete perspective on the System Life Cycle phases.
A foreword of the course is provided in order to appreciate the effects of using Systems Engineering with the purpose to support technical leadership and management of a project where a complex system is being analysed and/or developed. Thereafter, a first section of the course is dedicated to a focused analysis of logical modelling and related methods, presented by looking at their usefulness for the collection, analysis and formal specification of the requirements and design of the complex system (in terms of its functions, flows, organisation, processes and resources). Such a logical modelling is value driven: Systems Engineering is then guided by the target values of the system's stakeholders since its inception. The second section is more dedicated to the simulation analysis, and provides an overview of the project methodology required to prepare a simulation environment in order to test and validate the logical model of the complex system in terms of its dynamic and stochastic behaviour. Different simulation techniques will be highlighted (Monte Carlo Simulation, Discrete Event Simulation and Systems Dynamics), providing practical examples applied to real case studies. |
