This course aims at weaving together a sketch of the classical epistemological debates of the second half of 20th century and a discussion of the multifarious modes through which the developments of science can influence and modify our ideas about the process of knowledge. To sum up, today we observe a decisive shift from a normative to a critical epistemology: from the idea that an external point of view can and must dictate what scientists should do to the idea that scientific developments are open fields in which very different strategies of knowing coexist and interact, and that just this sort of plurality can inspire us to attempt further steps in research and in scientific accomplishments. Just for these general aims, we'll devote a lot of attention to the pivotal moments of the developments of modern and contemporary sciences, convinced that the reflection about major innovations and debates in the macrofield of the history of ideas can inspire major innovations and debates even in the microfield of the individual and collective researches.
The evaluation will be held in accordance with these general aims. We establish, at the end of the first lesson, small groups which have to discuss together their personal approaches to research and to scientific thought, with the help of written materials we give them and of points of vue exposed in the lessons. The final session will consist of an exposition of the works of the single groups, together with the discussions between groups. This will be the ground of an evaluation.

- Science. A question of coherence?
- A post-positivist epistemology. Merits and limits of falsificationism.
- What history of science can and must teach us. Revolutions and paradigms.
- How is rational to avoid falsifications? Arguments and rhetoric in history of science.
- Revolutions revisited. Lessons from Biology.
- Modern science: a history of decentralizations.
- Opening a space of possibilities: contexts and complexity.
- Discontinuities everywhere: the challenge of uncertainty.
- Constructivism. A possible answer.
- What is the truth for me? What is my relationship with my knowledge, in my experience? (Final session with groups) |
